Western Wines

There are two viticultural regions in western Romania: that of Banat, in the southern half, and that of Crisana and Maramures, to the north. They are separated by the Arad vineyards, which have distinct features.

Viticulture in this area covers 325 km, the result being that it is subject to the influence of various climatic, soil and orography conditions, leading to a wide range of varieties and wine quality. The southern areas, within the Banat wine-growing region, are enjoying the favorable influence of a climate with slight Mediterranean nuances, while the Central European climate – less favorable for vineyards – is influencing Crisana and Maramures.

Vineyards are scattered throughout this area, from the Danube – to the south – all the way to Halmeu, close to the country’s northern border, without however setting up any vast formations. They cover however an area exceeding 17,000 hectares, with a huge potential for expansion.

The Banat vines are concentrated within five wine-growing centers, the order to the north being: Moldova Noua, Tirol, Silagiu, Recas and Teremia.

The Arad County has one of the most famous vineyards in the country, i.e. Minis-Maderat, located in between the rivers Mures and Crisul Alb.

Going up north, in Crisana and Maramures, we come across the Diosig vineyard, then Valea lui Mihai, Silvaniei to the east, as well as several viticultural centers that should not be ignored: Biharia and Tileagd, to the south, Halmeu and Seini, to the north.

The viticulture in the area is mainly performed in the hills, since vines look for the shelter of the generous mountains as well as for the opening to the sun and light of the slopes. There are two exceptions: the vines in the Teremia win-growing center, in Banat and those from the Valea lui Mihai vineyard, in the Bihor and Satu Mare counties, located on level ground, whose fate is inextricably connected to the soils present here.

We intend to travel the entire length of the vines and wines itinerary in western Romania, the only regret being that there will be certain areas where we cannot stop for too long.

We want to get acquainted with less familiar wines and vines, at least through the products that the market is currently providing, which have a huge potential for self-assertion.
